Leo Baeck Funding Programme

Jewish life in Germany – School education and training

The Foundation raises awareness of the intellectual and cultural heritage of German-language Judaism in schools and universities. Particular attention is drawn to the Jewish contribution to Europe’s political, economic and cultural development. German President Horst Köhler has assumed patronage of the funding programme.

The Foundation supports teacher training, the development of teaching materials, and model school projects that transmit German-Jewish history in the classroom. The programme helps anchor German-Jewish history as an integral component of German history in the curricula, and gives pupils a solid grounding in the long and multifaceted history of German-speaking Jewish communities and their interaction with their non-Jewish surroundings.

In-service teacher-training institutes in individual German Länder can apply for funding to cover the cost of training measures. Furthermore, support is provided for pilot projects on the theme of German-Jewish history in individual schools.

The funding initiative is undertaken in cooperation with the Hertie Foundation and friends and supporters of the Leo Baeck Institute.
