Recommendations for action against anti-Semitism and anti-gypsyism in Central and Eastern Europe
Research and NGO teams in Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Hungary have evaluated existing data and projects and developed recommendations for action regarding policy and civil society. The reports are available in national languages and as English summaries.

This report is a distillation of five separate national reports (Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom). It presents the findings and recommendations that emerge from the project as a whole.
This series of reports published in April 2018 presents the findings and conclusions of an extensive research project conducted in 2016/2017 across five European countries – Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom – to investigate whether immigration from the Middle East and North Africa since 2011 has had an impact on antisemitic attitudes and behaviour in Western Europe. Interactions. Explorations of Good Practice in Educational Work with Video Testimonies of Victims of National Socialism (VOL. 4)
According to estimates, there are over 100,000 video testimonies with victims of National Socialism. Many of the interview archives are easily accessed, including some that are available in the Internet for free. While teachers are hesitant in making use of this treasure of source materials, learners are familiar with the figure of the eyewitness as communicated via film and television. But what can be taught with the help of what in cinematographic terms is often criticised as “talking heads”? What constitutes a good learning setting? And how do users interact with the – usually digitised – video testimonies and the collections that are often available online?
In January 2017 experienced educators and researchers attended an international workshop on “Localisation of video testimonies with victims of National Socialism in educational programmes” and discussed the question of what is good practice in this specific form of educational work. This volume is the result of that process. It provides an insight into the conceptual and practical ideas on which the various programmes are based.
Preserving Survivors' Memories- Digital Testimony Collections about Nazi Persecution: History, Education and Media (VOL. 3)
The third volume of this English-language series also addresses the preservation of eyewitness testimonies of National Socialism and their anchorage in the culture of memory in the 21st century. The passing away of remaining eyewitnesses, which is happening along with the transformation of information and communications technology, places high demands on the recording of eyewitness interviews. The volume focuses on the current debate over the technical possibilities for preserving eyewitness interviews.

To mark the conclusion of the funding programme "Teaching Human Rights", an international team under the aegis of the History Didactics Department, Freie Universität Berlin, produced this English-language handbook. It addresses the connection between historical learning and human rights education, and offers answers and suggestions from both theoretical and practical perspectives.

From Testimony to Story. Video Interviews about Nazi Crimes. Perspectives and Experiences in four Countries (VOL. 2)
The Foundation EVZ has published the second volume of its publication series "Educational work with testimonies" online. The English-language anthology presents various collections of interviews with survivors of National Socialism. Experts from Israel, Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany report on educational work with eyewitness interviews and reflect on international developments, trends and debates in this field. The publication documents the results of three international seminars that the Foundation EVZ held in its event series "Discovering and Understanding. Educational work with testimonies of victims of National Socialism" in the years 2010 and 2011.
“Working together for a better education”. Recommendations on equality in education for Sinti and Roma in Germany
How can access to education for Sinti and Roma be improved? How can equal opportunities be achieved? What principles must be observed to improve participation in education and educational attainments? And how can data need for this be surveyed and academic studies be conducted? The Foundation EVZ set up a nationwide working group to discuss these issues in which specialists from Sinti and Roma organisations played a leading role. Experts from the German states, municipalities, foundations and research and academia participated as equals. After two years of work their jointly drafted recommendations are now available.

Forms of Testimony. Reports, Works of Art, Stories of Those Persecuted under National Socialism (VOL. 1)
Over the past decades, the survivors of National Socialism have collected an extensive archive of testimonies with the aim of keeping alive the memory and as a symbolic warning for future generations. The Foundation EVZ is looking for ways to make use of these valuable resource materials in historical and political education. Since 2009, the Foundation has been supporting exchanges between experts in this field in the “Discovering and Understanding” seminars. These online publications aim to make the results of the seminars known to a wider public and to provide impetus for school and non-school education work. Volume 1 contains important contributions and discussions from five nationwide seminars, each focusing on particular types of testimony: video interviews, artistic testimonies, written testimonies and autobiographical eyewitness literature as well as material from National Socialist trials.

Teaching human rights through the history of crimean tatars
Regional Charity Foundation “Resonance” (Lviv) starts the project “Still coming back to Crimea: exploring history and human right through media”.
The publication focuses on the human rights violation regarding the deportation of the Crimean Tatars during World War II and the involving denial of their right to return. In a corresponding project both the opportunity of exploring history and human rights are embedded. Its program allows Ukrainian adolescents to look at local history from a human right’s perspective and to refer to other human rights issues. Thus, the project is supposed to offer supplementary learning matter besides school curriculum and aims at raising awareness of minority rights among Ukrainian youth through the exploration, reflection and discussion on the basis of the Crimean Tatars’ history. The objectives, methodology, participants’ profile, results, experiences, and more concerning the project’s work are presented in this manual.

Pilot Studies: Hate Crimes in Germany, Poland, Russia, Czech Republic and Ukraine
2008-2010, Foundation EVZ initiated research projects on the situation of hate crime victims in Germany, Poland, Russia, Czech Republic and Ukraine. Analyzing the country-specific frameworks and the scope of the problem, the research reports show which civil society organizations support hate crime victims, and which funding and networking support those organizations themselves require.
The reports were published in the language of the respective country, as well as in English and in German. They stimulate not only discussion among relevant initiatives and organizations throughout Europe, but also initiate public debates over hate crimes, discrimination and everyday racism in the countries examined.

Human Rights and History. A Challenge for Education

This volume elucidates the debates surrounding the historical development of human rights after 1945. The authors examine a number of specific human rights, including the prohibition of discrimination, freedom of opinion, the right to asylum and the prohibition of slavery and forced labor, to consider how different historical experiences and legal traditions shaped their formulation. Through the examples of Latin America and the former Soviet Union, they explore the connections between human rights movements and human rights education. Finally, they address current challenges in human rights education to elucidate the role of historical experience in education.

Human Trafficking in Germany. Strengthening Victim's Human Rights

The first study – "A human rights approach against human trafficking - International obligations and the status of implementation in Germany" – analyses how the prohibition of human trafficking and the resulting state obligations are anchored in human rights. The more recent specialised international agreements on human trafficking and law-making in the European Union are then presented. The emphasis is on the Council of Europe Convention, which professes to treat human trafficking in a human rights context. This publication presents an overview, from international perspectives, of the applicability and relevance of the Tool for Quality Assurance of Education for Democratic Citizenship in Schools, published jointly by UNESCO, the Council of Europe and the Centre for Educational Policies. Based on 10 country reports, it examines quality assurance requirements in the field of education for democratic citizenship (EDC) and compares the specific evaluation systems in those countries. It also provides a feasibility study on relevant conditions for implementing the Tool and aims to serve as a set of orientation guidelines for policy makers, a case study on implentation for researchers and a source book for education practitioners. Anyone who talks about Jewish life and the Jewish heritage cannot ignore Eastern Europe. The East European Jews are a paragon of frontier crossings, transnationalism, and the transfer of religion, tradition, language, and culture. From the 18th century onwards, most of the world’s Jewish population lived in Eastern Europe. Between 1870 and the First World War, some 3.5 million Jewish emigrants left their homelands, predominantly the Russian Empire and Habsburgruled Galicia. This emigration was the starting point for the founding of new Jewish communities in the United States, Canada, South Africa, Argentina, and Palestine. The majority of American Jews are descended from East European Jewry. In Israel, this is the case for more than half of the Jewish population. Some 80 per cent of Jews living in the world today have roots in Eastern Europe. In addition, several topographic maps are available (see below).
