PRIZE FOR INNOVATIVE INVESTMENT

The Foundation EVZ was awarded the “Foundation of the Year” prize at the Institutional Investor Swiss, German & Austrian Peer-to-Peer Awards. The award recognizes institutions that have excelled in the past year with innovative ideas and successful investment strategies. Ann-Grit Lehmann, Finance Officer (centre of the picture), accepted the prize on 24 October. more

TEAM “EVZ EXPANDED”: LABORATORY FOR NEW FUNDING FORMATS

In order to respond promptly to current social challenges and to promote the strategic development of the Foundation, “EVZ expanded” conceives of new methods and future-oriented funding formats. The term “expanded” stands for a connected and “expanded” team that dares to do new things, both methodologically and thematically. The “think and do tank” team consists of four women who collaborate with colleagues in the various fields of activity to complement the longer-term funding programmes.

22 NOVEMBER: CONFERENCE “EVERY DAY IS ROMADAY!”

The fall of 2017 marks the fifth anniversary of the opening of the Memorial to the Sinti and Roma Victims of National Socialism in Europe. The conference “Every Day is Romaday! Dialogue between Politics, Administration and Education in Germany” will take place on the occasion on 22 November in Berlin. On 21 November in Berlin, the Foundation EVZ will organize an accompanying networking meeting of projects that are working to strengthen the equal participation of Sinti and Roma in education.

22-23 NOVEMBER: MEETING OF HUMANITARIAN PROJECTS IN ST. PETERSBURG

On 22-23 November, CAF Russia will invite 16 organisations to one of the first trainings for projects that have begun implementing activities to support Nazi victims since September 2017. The opening event serves as an opportunity for networking and exchange of experiences between projects in the funding programme “Dialogue Forum”. Already in October, NGOs that have successfully implemented humanitarian projects met in the Russian city of Tula to exchange results, learn about the Jewish charity organization “Hasdej Neshama”, and much more.

24 NOVEMBER: ROUNDTABLE ON BIOGRAPHICAL LEARNING

On 24 November, the expert Olga Agapowa will present the results of her project with the NGO “Location St. Petersburg”: a training on the use of biographies in social work with survivors of Nazi persecution. A handbook for working with relatives of survivors will also be presented. Please register for the event through the association CAF Russia.

NETWORKING MEETING IN THE PROGRAMME “MIGRATION AND REMEMBRANCE CULTURE”

The first networking meeting of the projects in the programme “Migration and Remembrance Culture” took place on 25-26 October in Berlin to train multipliers. The Foundation EVZ seeks to support institutions of historical and political education in including target groups that have previously had little access to the remembrance culture in Germany. In particular, support is provided for people with migration and refugee experiences to get involved and contribute their perspectives. The goal is to incorporate the perspectives of all project implementers into the further development of the programme “Migration and Remembrance Culture”.

OPENING OF THE PHOTO EXHIBITION “LEST WE FORGET”

On 9 November, the photo exhibition “LEST WE FORGET” by the German-Italian artist Luigi Toscano will open in Berlin with 50 large format photo portraits of survivors of Nazi persecution from Germany, Israel, the USA, Ukraine and Russia. The memorial art and culture project can be viewed until 26 November at the Sophienkirche, Große Hamburger Straße 29-30, in Berlin-Mitte.

THEATRE PERFORMANCE “JULLER”

The “Theater der Jungen Welt” in Leipzig shows in strong pictures and dynamic scenes the life of the German-Jewish national football player Julius Hirsch. After a successful start in Leipzig, the tour will visit ten Bundesliga cities. The first guest appearance took place on 11 October in the sold-out German Football Museum in Dortmund. The performances are accompanied by workshop offerings in cooperation with fan projects and local actors who engage against racism, anti-Semitism and discrimination. Claudia Roth, Member of the German Parliament and patron of the production: “At a time when the world seems to be spinning out of control, it is theatre performances like ‘Juller’ that provide us with orientation and security, and caution us about the future.”

YANA BITS FROM UKRAINE WINS “INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DEBATE”

The four best German-speaking debaters from Central and Eastern Europe competed at the 11th international finals of “International Youth Debate” in Tallinn. Yana Bits from Ukraine convinced the jury with her argument on the question: “Should the internet be comprehensively regulated by the state?” The 20 national champions from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine and Hungary met at the international finals. President of the Estonian Parliament, Eiki Nestor, sponsored the 11th international finals.

MEET UP! NETWORKING MEETINGS: STRANGERS BECOME FRIENDS

The networking meeting of “MEET UP! German-Ukrainian Youth Encounters” brought together around 100 participants from the Ukraine, Germany and Russia in Berlin from 20-23 September. The participants engaged in workshops on topics such as “Urban transformation”, “Human rights”, “Memory” and “Media and art”. In creative workshops they designed posters, tested international games or sang German and Ukrainian songs. On 21 September, Dr. Andreas Eberhard (Chairman of the Foundation EVZ) and Dr. Maja Pflüger (Robert Bosch Foundation) greeted the 250 guests. Then, the Ukrainian journalist Olesja Jaremtschuk took them on an imaginary German-Ukrainian journey.

LATCHO DIVES – A FUNDING PROGRAMME FOR SURVIVORS OF THE ROMA GENOCIDE

In 2017, the funding programme “Latcho Dives” issued its second call for applications. 25 NGOs from eight countries – Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic – submitted their applications by July 15th. Eleven projects were selected by an international jury in October, and can begin their work in the new year. With the funding programme, the Foundation EVZ seeks to contribute to the recognition of the persecution histories of survivors of the Roma genocide, to improve their health, material and social conditions, and to support civil society organisations that engage on behalf of Roma people.

LAUNCH OF RUSSIAN VERSION OF “LEARNING WITH INTERVIEWS: FORCED LABOUR 1939-1945”

After successful launches of the German and Czech versions of “Learning with Interviews: Forced Labour 1939-1945”, the learning platform is now also available in Russian: the online application can be used as a tool in school curriculum, and places the life stories of selected former forced labourers in focus. It is funded by the Foundation EVZ and implemented by the Oral History Centre at the Voronezh Institute of High Technologies and the Center for Digital Systems at the Freie Universität Berlin.

OLIVJE MEETS POTATO PANCAKES: A TASTY GERMAN-UKRAINIAN YOUTH ENCOUNTER

A German-Ukrainian cookbook was the product of this MEET UP! encounter in the summer in Lviv. Young people from Berlin and Sumy brought their favourite recipes and cooked dishes such as ‘herring under the fur coat’, olivje salad, potato pancakes or ‘fairy dust cake with unicorn crumbles’. In the process of cutting and frying, the cooks also shared a lot of laughs and discussions. And the Ukrainian and German participants realized that they were much more similar than initially thought. Their recipes and stories for a better world have been published in an exciting and very special cookbook.

KICK-OFF WORKSHOP AT THE HUBHUB IN WARSAW

Against the backdrop of current events in Poland, the NGO Humanity in Action Poland seeks to enable young people to develop sustainable civil society activities that combine social entrepreneurship with democratic values and an inclusive society. For this purpose, its three-part project targets three different groups. All three components complement each other: innovative educational tools are developed and tested in a Knowledge Hub; the Trendsetting Hub develops technological tools to combat hate speech; and knowledge, competencies and contacts are developed in a Social Action Hub, in order to enable the development of socially responsible business ideas.

“DAS SPIEL MIT DEN ANDEREN. FUßBALL ZWISCHEN INTEGRATION UND DISKRIMINIERUNG” (“PLAYING WITH OTHERS. FOOTBALL BETWEEN INTEGRATION AND DISCIMINATION”)

This publication contains reports and interviews from initiatives combatting right-wing extremism, anti-Semitism and homophobia in football. The book is part of the ‘action sports bag’ developed by the theatre educator Bettina Frank. It is used as part of the performance tour of the theatre plan “Juller”.

“ANTISEMITISMUSKRITISCHE BILDUNG IN DER MIGRATIONSGESELLSCHAFT” (“EDUCATION CRITICAL OF ANTI-SEMITISM IN THE MIGRATION SOCIETY”)

The publication of the Foundation EVZ-funded ‘Perspectives’ conference series addresses anti-Semitism as a persistent problem in Germany. Resentment against Jews can be found, for example, in a reduced critique of capitalism or in the radical rejection of the state of Israel. These developments have been exacerbated by increasing immigration to Germany. The volume asks how educational work can respond to this trend.

EUROPEANS FOR PEACE: CELEBRATE DIVERSITY! YOUTH EXCHANGE FOR ALL

“Celebrate diversity! Youth exchange for all” is the theme of the new call for applications in the youth exchange programme EUROPEANS FOR PEACE. A colourful film invites schools and extracurricular educational institutions to apply until 22 January 2018 for funding for joint project work with an international partner. EUROPEANS FOR PEACE seeks to get young people interested and invested in moral courage and social commitment. In international exchange projects, young people address diversity, respect and social cohesion.

THEATRE PROJECTS WITH TESTIMONIES OF VICTIMS OF NATIONAL SOCIALISM

What remains of the witnesses to National Socialist crimes? Their testimonies remain: interviews, photos, diaries, autobiographies, poems, compositions and drawings. They confront us with the personal experiences, stories and observations of survivors. The Foundation EVZ supports the development of innovative formats for making these biographic narratives tangible in the culture of remembrance.

ENCOUNTERS WITH FORMER FORCED LABOURERS

In addition to travel for survivors from abroad to Germany, the Foundation EVZ is now funding travel within Germany for encounters with young people and other interested audiences. In individual cases, youth and inter-generational projects can also be funded for travel from Germany to visit survivors in Central and Eastern Europe, Israel or the USA. The funding is provided in the form of flat-rate travel and accommodation allowances for survivors and accompanying persons.

CALL FOR PAPERS – WORKING GROUP ON THE “DESCENDANTS OF NAZI VICTIMS”

The Federal Information and Counselling Association for Victims of National Socialism invites international experts to apply to take part in two interdisciplinary working groups on current issues facing the descendants of Nazi victims. One working group will meet in April, and another in June 2018, to discuss challenges in historical-political education and psychosocial questions. The application deadline is 5 January 2018.

BEING HUMAN – A STORY COMPETITION

The implementing partners in the programme “Dialogue Forum” from the Ukraine and Russia have announced a joint international competition. Professional authors as well as survivors or their relatives are invited to submit documentary narratives on “Humanity in the Second World War” in the Russian or Ukrainian language.
