THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETS ABROAD FOR THE FIRST TIME

On the invitation of the Czech Foreign minister, the Board of Trustees of the Foundation EVZ met in Prague on 21 June 2018. It marked the first time that a meeting of the international board took place outside Berlin. The Foundation EVZ is very pleased to further strengthen the link with its Central and Eastern European partners in such a symbolic place, 20 years after the Czech–German Declaration.
On 20 June 2018, projects supported by the Foundation had the opportunity to introduce themselves to the Board of Trustees. A conversation with eyewitnesses at Živá paměť also explored the living conditions of elderly Holocaust survivors in the Czech Republic. The Impact Hub Prague then presented the new “EVZ Lab for Civil Society”, which is based there.

In April 2018 the Foundation EVZ sponsored a screening of the documentary “Yes, Andrei Ivanovich” at the Kino Central in Berlin. The film profiles one of the last survivors of the Buchenwald concentration camp. Hannes Farlock, the film’s director and a former volunteer with Action Reconciliation Service for Peace, got to know the now 92-year-old Andrei Ivanovich in Minsk, and the two developed a close relationship. The filmmaker accompanied the survivor through his everyday life for over a year – beekeeping at the dacha, enjoying vodka and sausages with neighbours, on his girlfriend Galina Mihailovna’s birthday, and during his work as a night watchman. The film offers rare insights into a lovable but almost forgotten country in the heart of Europe, Belarus.
