Germany society faces diverse challenges in a world increasingly shaped by globalisation and migration. Immigration and emigration have also sparked new scientific and pedagogical discussions about how to address history in a manner appropriate to contemporary society.
From a wide range of identities arise new perspectives on the history of National Socialism. Migration histories, intertwined histories and transnational approaches are gaining in importance. New educational offerings are being created with and for people with experiences of flight and migration, taking up transnational questions and diverse historical narratives, and thereby expanding the remembrance culture in Germany. The Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” supports these processes through funding for the development of educational materials as well as training for multipliers on the development of innovative, target-group oriented offerings for practitioners in historical-political education.
The focus of the projects is on target groups who, until now, have had less access to memory culture. Oriented towards inclusion, the projects aim to actively involve and enable participation in historical education. People with migration experience were emboldened to work in cooperation with people born in Germany in the field of historical-political education. In this process, they are encouraged to incorporate their own perspectives on memory culture, especially towards the history of National Socialism. In line with this goal, participants received accreditation as educational multipliers, in terms of both content and didactics, allowing them to independently develop Workshops for their work and guiding tours with visiting groups.
In this project, by the Stadtjugendring Stuttgart e.V., participants will create educational offerings, together and on their own, surrounding the National Socialist history of Stuttgart. They will have the possibility to develop their own concepts and to continue their work with the public.
Erinnern für die Zukunft e.V. supports the Bunker Valentin Memorial Site in enabling access for people with strongly differentiated backgrounds. This project schools persons with migration backgrounds to be educational multipliers in the historico-political realm. The aim is to integrate their perspectives into the fabric of the memorial site. By creating their own offerings and concepts, participants will be empowered to continue working with and at the site beyond the project itself.
Traces of Life: Mine.Yours.Ours
In this project by the group AG Asylsuchende Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge e.V, in Pirna, participants will work through the regional history surrounding National Socialism, creating their own offerings, while developing the content for a Handbook about the dissemination of this knowledge. A one-day symposium will allow an exchange with local historians and other educational multipliers.
Shaping Education at Buchenwald Together
The Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation will teach a group of persons with and without migration experience about the history of the memorial space. Through participation in the creation of a new educational offering for the Memorial, the newly qualified educational multipliers will contextualize visits in a novel way, most likely in the form of a multilingual Audiowalk.
Manara – Lighthouse
The Inssan e.V. in Berlin will educate a group of persons with migration experience as educational multipliers. Through participation in the project design process, participants will be able to test their self-developed educational offerings. As part of the schooling, participants will plan a study trip to the Concentration Camp Memorial Site Buchenwald and visit the Anne Frank Center in Berlin.
The focus of this educational program at the Alexander Haus e.V. lies in the development of dialogue projects with refugees and local residents. In workshops, conversations and exchanges, participants are stimulated through a focus on personal histories and the histories of respective native countries. Herein, a new forum for dialogue is created, in the sense of community building. A website serves the purpose of documenting the process and creating a networking platform for similar projects.
History in Motion: Memory Practices, History Cultures and Historical Education in German Migration Society
In this project, the transition and transformation of history culture in and through German migration society is empirically investigated. The pursued question explores what the collective past means in the context of the diversity of the German migration society. As part of this, researchers interrogate institutional reactions to the diversification of historical meaning constructions, examining through four subprojects the places, forms, content and perspectives of actors in the field of historical education. A kick-off symposium, three workshops and a concluding conference, create the space necessary for discussion. In addition, the project team will conceive and publish a handbook about historical education in the migration society.
By taking insights from globally entangled history, connections to our highly networked global present become clear. The Foundation EVZ funds the creation of educational materials about the entanglement of the National Socialist past with other violent and unjust histories, especially those marginalized in German memory culture.
Racism in Colonialism and National Socialism: Form—Function—Consequence
In March 2016, the development of a new practically oriented educational material began in a cooperation of the University Hamburg with the Neuengamme Memorial Site and the University Augsburg. The online portal focuses on the racisms of colonialism and National Socialism from the perspective of entangling the histories. In this, the project pursues two thematic threads. On the one hand, it investigates in an exemplary way the structures and functioning of colonial power exertion, as well as colonial elements of Nazi occupation policies in Eastern Europe. On the other, biographies are used to trace the lives and connections between actors in former colonies and their descendants. Furthermore, the material questions the degree of confrontation with German colonialism after 1945, especially asking to what extent racist thinking continues to affect our contemporary society.
Fluchtpunkte (Points of Escape) presents seven exemplary life stories, all with experiences of fleeing and migration, making the entanglement of German and Austrian history with the history of the Middle East clear and approachable. The biographies are contained in six educational learn modules that enable discussion about historical and political processes, identity constellations and different narratives. The material allows educational work with the themes of escape and migration, as well as antisemitism and racism, in the context of National Socialism and with respect to the consequences of past European Middle East policies.
“Trip into the Modern” German-Turkish-Ottoman encounters in the first half of the 20th century
The project makes the German-Ottoman-Turkish history accessible from out of the themes of ‘travel’ and ‘encounter’. The approach of entangled history serves to break nationally oriented historical narratives with a multi-perspectival vision towards the political, social and cultural worlds of the first half of the 20th century. An interactive map of Germany and the Ottoman Empire represents this content. By picking individual places, users can trace travel and life paths, learning about the respective people and places.
With the funding of seven projects in the area of historical education multipliers a consulting contract was also given, for the guidance, capacity building and networking of all projects. The Kooperative Berlin received this contract.
This project by the Amaro Drom e.V. had the goal of education Roma and Romnja Germany-wide, qualifying them to act as educational multipliers in the history and memory culture of Roma, Jewish (and other minorities) histories. Through historical and human rights oriented education didactic concepts were conceived, to be used in a local context, inciting conversations about racism, antiromaism, antisemitism in history and in memory. On top of this, participants of the project became trainers at the Amaro Drom, running workshops to educate others on themes surrounding the above themes.
‘Not about us without us’ – A Change of Perspective in the Confrontation with Genocide
The August Bebel Institut in Berlin focused their educational project on the theme of genocide in the 20th century. In doing so, history should not only be told from the German perspective, but include the documented stories and perspectives of descendants. The teaching included content and methodologically oriented workshops, the organisation of a conference, activities surrounding Genocide Remembrance Day and the creation of an exhibition together with the Mitte Museum Berlin.
Diversity, Memory, History – Apprenticeship program for Educational Multipliers for a heterogeneous Society
In this course offered by the Max Mannheimer Haus in Dachau persons with and without migration experience, develop concepts for tours and study programs at Dachau memorial site together. The courses sought to properly address the challenges of historical-political education in and for the migration society.
This project by the Werkstattfilm e.V. created tours around the thematic of Jewish, Roma and Sinti life and the history of forced labour in Oldenburg during the time of National Socialism. A mobile exhibition was also created. Participants connected their experiences with migration and of fleeing with the historical sources and survivor testimonies, thereby expanding the memory discourse around the history of National Socialism. The products of this collaborative work are available in multiple languages.
The Bildungsstätte Anne Frank in Frankfurt / Main developed interactive and innovative workshops for educational work with youth—with and without migration or refugee backgrounds—in a participant-oriented process. The workshops were created for the new Anne Frank exhibit and for a new exhibit in the Jewish Museum Frankfurt / Main. At the same time, the project give the young adults a perspective on work in museum pedagogy and extracurricular historical-political education.
In this project the Multikulturelles Zentrum Dessau e.V. educated young people. On the one hand, this project created the space to deepen the participants understanding of National Socialism in Dessau as well as the general theme of collective violence in the 20th century. On the other, the development of pedagogical concepts for educational work with groups of different age, gender, nationality and religion and creating a booklet were also integral.
Be the Change! - Collectively shaping memory culture at the Vogelsang International Place
In an educational development process, persons with or without migration and refugee experience were qualified together in teams to be multipliers of historical-political education at the Academy Vogelsang IP. At the memorial site Vogelsang—a so-called perpetrator site—the focus is especially on engagement with and in a differentiated and critical memory culture. The participants learned inclusive approaches to didactics in historical education and human rights as well as the pedagogy for themes surrounding democracy. Furthermore, participants got to know participative approaches to imparting knowledge and were able to create, on this basis, new and inclusive formats for historical education surrounding memory culture.
Over 100 people from all over Germany came together on the 30th of November and 1st of December 2018 to jointly create a BarCamp about the topic of “Migration and Remembrance Culture”. The open format BarCamp concept led to 35 independent sessions on site. All participants of the program “Migration and Remembrance Culture” were invited alongside other stakeholders from this field. Together, they investigated the status quo and discussed how to sculpt our memory landscape in the future.
