The EVZ Foundation was founded on a single principle: accountability has no expiration date. Our mandate is to stand up for the equal dignity and equal rights of all people, in memory of the victims of National Socialism.

In view of our foundation’s mandate and our civil society partners in Saxony-Anhalt, we find yesterday’s election result alarming in the extreme: For the first time since the end of the Second World War, a state-level political party defined by the Constitution as right-wing extremist has secured a majority of votes.

We are deeply concerned by the electoral success achieved by a right-wing extremist party in Saxony-Anhalt which:

  • shows no sense of responsibility for the victims of Nazi injustice and talks in its manifesto of “…perpetuation of the guilt complex…”;
  • denies ongoing exclusion and hatred and propagates the claim “…that genuine racism barely exists anymore…”;
  • turns a blind eye to the dramatic rise in antisemitic, anti-Roma/Sinti, and anti-queer attacks, while lamenting “…excessive emphasis on minority rights…”.

To

  • memorials and sites of remembrance for National Socialist injustice,
  • organizations dedicated to historical-political education and anti-discrimination work, and
  • self-organized groups representing: Jews, Roma and Sinti, as well as LGBTIQ individuals in Saxony-Anhalt:

We believe in your vital contribution to our free democratic basic order and stand in solidarity with you.

With our foundation’s mandate firmly in mind, we reaffirm that: We will continue to translate our solidarity into intensified commitment to civil society organizations facing pressure in Germany and around the world. We will stand up for a nation characterized by solidarity, tolerance, and openness to the world, and one that takes the lessons of history seriously.
