Karya 1943: Remembering occupation, forced labor, and Jewish life in Greece

The project raises awareness of the National Socialist occupation of Greece – a history that is largely unknown in Germany - with special attention to forced labor - and the extermination of Greece’s Jewish population.

What do the project sponsor and the EVZ Foundation seek to achieve with this project?
The project raises awareness of the National Socialist occupation of Greece – a history that is largely unknown in Germany – with special attention to forced labor
and the extermination of Greece’s Jewish population. It educates target groups about the crimes and suffering endured and actively involves young people and the
victims’ descendants, thus creating space for a joint critical examination of the past.
Who is involved, and who does the project reach?
The project brings victims of National Socialist persecution, their descendants, and self-organizations together with Greek and German university and school students, journalists, and teachers. It facilitates cross-generational encounters and strengthens transnational dialog on remembrance and responsibility.
Why is the EVZ Foundation supporting this project in particular?
Its centerpiece is an exhibition that explores the topic from the victims’ perspective. It brings the German occupation, the famine that claimed more than 100,000 lives, and the Holocaust against Greek Jews to public awareness – in Greece and Germany alike. The project’s participatory approach involves young people and the victims’ descendants in particular. One of the cooperation partners, the University of Osnabrück, conducted an extensive geoarchaeological study on-site in Karya, the results of which were incorporated in the digital exhibition.
