Bridge for the Future - pont pour l'avenir

The bridge over the Rhine at Breisach connects France and Germany. Due to its 150-year history, the bridge will be the historical and concrete starting point for the interdisciplinary parts of the project. Current plans for a new railroad bridge inspire a variety of remembrance formats and give rise to cross-border partnerships. An attempt is being made to answer open questions by means of historical research.

Biographical work
Both French and German adolescents examine and discuss the life stories of people who suffered National Socialist injustice. They will develop creative and participatory approaches to the topic of Franco-German history, e.g. with the methods of "storyboard telling" and the "life memory suitcase". These methods create a link to the present. Participants deepen their knowledge of National Socialist injustice and develop exhibitions and educational material.

Dancing to Connect (DtC)
The Battery Dance Company New York applies its globally tried and tested DtC dance workshop method to the Franco-German memory work on National Socialist injustice in a creative, non-verbal format. Adolescents with different backgrounds are given artistic and emotional access to their own narratives and those of others. The dance performances will be staged on the bridge and theater stage on the 80th anniversary of May 8, 1945.

Memorial
Under professional artistic direction, designs and contributions are being created for a future memorial at the newly planned railroad bridge.

The Blue House in Breisach has been a memorial and educational site for the history of the Jews on the Upper Rhine since 2003. The heritage-protected former Jewish community center accommodates a museum and is a research and encounter place.
The project team works in close collaboration with the municipalities and institutions of Alsace. Cooperation partners are the French-German cultural center Art'Rhena and the internationally renowned Battery Dance Company New York.
