Investigating the railway as a system operated by the National Socialists, both locally on the Weiden–KZ Flossenbürg route and also nationally, the project sheds light on the transportation of more than 100,000 prisoners in a storytelling format.
The cross-media project Letzter Halt:Flossenbürg [Last stop: Flossenbürg] is dedicated to the history of the now closed railway between Weiden and Flossenbürg in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. From 1938 it was used for the transport of tens of thousands of concentration camp inmates and to transport the products of their forced labor. The Weiden–Flossenbürg route developed into one of the most important connections between Flossenbürg concentration camp and other camps.
dekoder is a German online magazine covering eastern Europe with a focus on Russia and Belarus. Core profile: dekoder brings together independent Russian, Belorussian and Ukrainian voices from free media with academically substantiated background texts onto a single platform. At the same time, in cooperation with universities, research institutes and memorial sites, dekoder implements media projects at the interface between academia and journalism. dekoder has twice won the Grimme Online Award, most recently in 2021 for its research-based specials. In 2024, dekoder was nominated for the prize with its project Der Krieg und seine Opfer [The War and Its Victims on the history of civilian victims in the German-Soviet war. Furthermore, in 2021 dekoder won the Karl Wilhelm Fricke Prize for outstanding commitment to freedom, democracy and civil courage.
One particular strength of dekoder – in addition to the extensive academic network – lies in its willingness to experiment and its expertise in scroll-based storytelling and in accessible formats to present complex historical content.
