“THE GERMANS ARE BACK” – RECONCILIATION AND SEARCHING FOR TRACES IN BELARUS
The film “Die Deutschen sind zurück” (“The Germans are Back”) tells the story of German young people’s reconciliation work and investigations of the traces of the past in Belarus.
Ulrike Jaeger has been traveling to Belarus with German youth for over 15 years. Together with Belarusians of the same age, they renovate the houses of elderly people and get to know the simple life in the Belarusian countryside. For young Germans, this journey leads not only to another world, but also to another time. They meet men and women whose memories of the Second World War are still very vivid. “Now the Germans are back,” the older people say – it is often the first time that they have come into contact with Germans since the end of the war. This time the Germans do not destroy, but rebuild their houses. The film screening will be followed by a discussion with the director.
