PRESS RELEASE

Memorial for the Kindertransporte 1938/1939 from the Hook of Holland

Berlin, 2. December 2011.
A memorial created by Frank Meisler for the Kinderstransport (Refugee Children Movement) in 1938/1939 was unveiled in the Hook of Holland on Wednesday. The sculpture, together with those in London, Berlin and Danzig, commemorates the ferrying of 10,000 children to England from the Hook of Holland, saving them from the Nazi terror. The Foundation EVZ provided financial support to enable eyewitnesses to attend the inauguration ceremony.

Through the rescue operations, which were organised by Dutch refugee committees, over 10,000 boys and girls found a safe haven in London. Most of the children were of Jewish origin from Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany. Since 2006, Israeli artist Frank Meisler, who was also one of those rescued, has created sculptures for London, Berlin and Danzig to mark the different routes taken by the Kindertransport campaign across Europe.

This is likely to be the last time a sculpture commemorating the rescue operation is unveiled, and it underscores the important role played by the Hook of Holland ferry port in bringing these children across the English Channel.
