PRESS RELEASE
Berlin, 28. November 2011. With his photo entitled “Hungry”, Alexander Sayenko from Belarus has won this year’s photography competition run by the Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future”. The competition, which the Foundation EVZ has been holding since 2005, was open to all-comers for the first time this year. Addressing the theme “All human beings are created free and equal”, 358 participants from 36 countries sent in their individual contributions to the competition.
The jury, under the direction of photographer Birgit Meixner, reviewed all the entries and then selected the ten best, each of which received a cash prize of EUR 250. These ten were then posted on the internet, where Facebook users were asked to choose their favourite from among the shortlisted entries over a period of two weeks. The votes had to be cast by 23:59 on Friday, 25 November 2011. With his photo “Hungry”, subtitled “Every day, the sisters in a Catholic convent in Belarus provide meals for the homeless and needy”, Alexander Sayenko was the overall winner of the internet vote.
The winner of the public vote receives double the prize money, making a total of EUR 500.
The Foundation EVZ congratulates Alexander Sayenko on winning the first prize, and the runners-up in places 2 to 10.
