The EU website www.zwangsarbeit.eu provides a wide range of information on the history of forced labour under National Socialism.
The Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” (EVZ) supports the website, which allows visitors to search through a large body of information on forced labour. The service is designed for former forced labourers, interested members of the general public and academics. The website is operated by the German federal archives (Bundesarchiv) in cooperation with several archiving institutions in Germany and abroad.
The search function helps users to find archives that contain materials on forced labour under National Socialism. Selected documents can be viewed online. In the bibliography there are over 1,000 titles on the theme of forced labour.
The history section provides basic information on the use of foreign workers in the Kaiserreich (German Empire 1871-1918) and the Weimar Republic, prisoners of war in World War I, civilian and military forced labourers in the National Socialist regime, the situation of displaced persons and the repatriation of forced labourers from the Soviet Union after May 1945.
The overview of the history of the compensation of former forced labourers from 1945 up to the present, contained in the Payments section, may be of particular interest.
The website www.zwangsarbeit-archiv.de contains audio and video interviews with eyewitnesses.
The internet portal "Forced Labor 1939-1945" commemorates the more than 12 million people who were forced to work for Nazi Germany. 590 eyewitnesses from 26 countries tell their life stories in 398 audio interviews and 192 video interviews. The interviews have been transferred to digital storage media. Since January 2009, users have been able to access these interviews online. The archive also contains short biographies and further information on the theme.
Visitors must first register before they can use the archive. Currently, the archive is available to students, researchers and educators. The interviews were conducted by an academic team under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Alexander von Plato.
A selection of the video interviews has been installed on a PC media station as part of the permanent exhibition at the German Historical Museum in Berlin.
The project is operated under a cooperation agreement between the Freie Universität Berlin, the German Historical Museum and the Foundation EVZ.
