During World War II, the National Socialist regime deployed and exploited millions of forced labourers in the German Reich, the Axis nations and countries under German military occupation. The aim of the international conference is to present the results of current research into the deployment of forced labourers in Hitler’s Europe, a subject that has been largely neglected to date.
The conference will in particular identify and attempt to close the knowledge gaps on the subject of forced labour in regions outside the German Reich, as well as exploring the conditions experienced by former forced labourers after 1945. International academics will present their current results of research regarding the country-specific manifestations of forced labor during World War II at the conference in Berlin. Tanja Penter, Irina Scherbakowa, Tomas Jelinek, Volkhard Knigge and Alexander von Plato will discuss the dimensions of Nazi forced labor in Europe, its consequences and memories as well as the situation of former forced laborers after the war and nowadays. The conference is divided into two thematic forums: Forced labour in occupied Europe and Memories of forced labour after 1945.
